(Philadelphia, Pa.) – Kristin Beehler, Niki Flach, Sarah Giles-Madden and Brooke Jones each had a hand in two wins as the Army women’s tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over host St. Joseph’s Tuesday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Black Knights (11-10) pushed their record above .500 for the first time this season with the win over the Hawks (10-8).
Army opened the match with a clean sweep of the doubles point. Giles-Madden and Jessica Shurtz got the ball rolling at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 decision over Gina DiGiacomo and Marisa Donelson. Flach and Jones followed at No. 1 doubles where they extended their winning streak to nine with a win over Stephania Velazquez and Jennifer Kedzierski, 8-6. Beehler and Paige Ford completed the sweep at No. 3 by defeating Krysta Contino and Lauren Kuhmerker, 9-7.
The Black Knights showed the same type of domination in singles action. Diana Alquero and Bridie Burke posted the two easiest victories of the day at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectfully. Alquero beat Contino, 6-1, 6-0, while Burke defeated Donelson, 6-0, 6-2.
Beehler, Flach, Giles-Madden and Jones were others to walk away with singles points. Beehler took her match at No. 4 from DiGiacomo, 6-2, 6-1. Flach won her third straight match at No. 1 singles over Velazquez, 7-5, 6-3. Giles-Madden defeated Erika Guers, 6-1, 6-3. And Jones claimed her seventh consecutive decision at No. 2 singles by defeating Kedzierski, 6-2, 6-3.
Army will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for its next match on Saturday, April 14, for a 10 a.m. with Bucknell in a rematch of the 2006 Patriot League Championships.
