ALBANY – Sophomore utility player Shayna Burgess of the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team received the 2012-13 SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award for the sport of softball, as announced by SUNY Central. The Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award is given to a member of the first or second All-Conference Team with the highest GPA (3.3 or higher) for at least three semesters, as determined by the latest State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) All-Academic Team and Commissioner’s List.

Student-athletes are nominated by their campus athletic director, and their credentials and accomplishments are then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across SUNY as well as the provost’s office.

Burgess is New Paltz’s first-ever SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award recipient from the softball program. She carries a 3.82 cumulative grade-point average through the spring 2013 semester, and she is a two-time SUNYAC All-Academic Team honoree and earned a spot on the SUNYAC Commissioner’s List this past academic year. Burgess distinguished herself as one of the best utility players in the region, earning a spot on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Northeast Region First Team and the All-SUNYAC Second Team.

Statistically, Burgess finished out the year ranked sixth in NCAA Division III in hit by pitch per game (0.39, 15 total), and she stole the fifth-most bases in the SUNYAC (12) in 14 attempts. Her statistical line for the year also included a .347 batting average, 43 hits, 11 RBI, 10 doubles, 10 walks and a .991 fielding percentage (99 putouts and 14 assists in 114 total chances). Burgess is a 2011 graduate of Commack High School, and she is the daughter of William and Hope Burgess.

During the spring semester, junior Paige Munroe from women’s tennis and senior defender/midfielder Kim Lepore from field hockey were also accorded with the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award in their respective sports. It marks the first time since 2007-08 that at least three New Paltz student-athletes have received the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award during the same academic year.
