Student-Athletes Finish Annual Leadership Summit

By Brian Savard

NEW PALTZ – From Wednesday-Thursday, Aug. 13-14, 21 student-athletes at the State University of New York at New Paltz partook in the Department of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation’s third-annual Leadership Summit on New Paltz’s campus.

The Institute for Leadership and Training (TILT), led by Peter Athans and Jonathan Kroll, facilitated the two-day program, which included physical and mental performance training in addition to other various leadership development programming. In total, the 21 student-athletes who attended represented 12 of the department’s 15 teams.

“I think I learned a lot about motivating my team and how to help people stay mentally focused and push through the mental blocks they might have,” senior softball player Meg Brewer said.

“At the Leadership Summit, we talked a lot about the mental aspect of our game and how we can improve upon that while also staying focused during the physical aspect of it when we’re tired,” senior women’s volleyball player Alli Coleman said. “Communication is big, attitude is big. Our team culture was talked about a lot.”
