PORT EWEN – Denim, along with floral, paisley, bright stripes, and geometric patterned hand-made pouches are on sale in the Ulster BOCES school store. The purses, which are priced at $8 each, are part of a fundraising effort by the Fashion Design students. Proceeds raised by the sale will go to the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
In addition to producing the bags, which can be used for makeup, school supplies, and tools, the students have been learning about entrepreneurship. They studied production and sales, quality control, inventory, mark-up/profit, and direct costs.
Ulster BOCES Fashion Design student Taina Aviles of the Wallkill Central School District came up with the idea and enlisted the help of her classmates. Aviles has family in Puerto Rico and she is worried about them and the other residents of the hard-hit area. The senior says she was surprised at how quickly the bags are selling and can’t wait to get the money to them.” I just want to help the people in Puerto Rico.”
Students in the Ulster BOCES National Technical Honor Society are also working to support the hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. The students are collecting personal hygiene products, such as shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant. Supplies for this drive can be dropped off at the Career & Technical Center. Anyone who wants to donate money to the cause can do so through the Red Cross website.
