Dear Editor:
When I graduated from college, the prevailing attitude from older women toward younger women was, \”Oh, no you don’t! There’s no room for anymore of us.\” These were staunch Feminists from the 1960s and ‘70s, highly enlightened individuals who inspired a song by Helen Reddy that caused people all over the world to no longer pity the deaf but envy them instead.
Young people – damn them all, men and women – always stubbornly refuse to go away. So these fine ladies of the generation that came before me did eventually have to deal with me and others toiling away beside them shoulder-to-shoulder. And these days I often smile fondly and say to one of them, \”Isn’t it a funny old world? Who would have imagined we could get along so well together and be so productive?\”
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that being a human on this planet is not easy and will not become any easier as time goes on. So can we drop the \”War Against Women\” crap?
It doesn’t hold any more water than the war against Christians, Islam, conservatives, liberals or fill-in-the-blank with the victim of the week. Why can’t we evolve into \”People Empowering People\”? It might be the only way we’re going to make it as a species.
There are true victims in this world whose suffering is real and quite tangible. However, the loudest carrying-on seems to come from the self-appointed targets of imagined insults.
Happily, I’ve noticed that most youngsters don’t seem to buy into this victimized mentality. Perhaps that’s why the purveyors of the victimized-group-of-the-week are ramping up and becoming more hypersensitive, unreasonable and hysterical: they see that the adults of tomorrow have no use for them, so this is their last hurrah.
I sure hope so.
