Vassar Falls 5-4 to St. Lawrence University

CANTON – It came down to the final match, but the Vassar College women’s tennis team ultimately fell to St. Lawrence University on the road Sunday, 5-4.

The Brewers (4-2) rallied to to take a 4-3 advantage, but the Saints took the final two matches to secure the win and improve to 2-0 on the season.

In No. 3 doubles, Morgan Fitzgerald and Kate Christensen struck first by taking down Hallie Young and Laramie McHue, 8-5. But Morgan McNeal and Georgia Comber beat Shayna Becker and Hanna McGuire, 8-5, in No. 1 doubles, and Alexandra Dadoly and Emily Wyman narrowly defeated Kelsey Van Noy and Lauren Stauffer, 9-7, in No. 2 doubles, taking a 2-1 edge into singles.

Christensen evened the game at 2-all with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Wyman at the number one slot, and Van Noy gave the Brewers a 3-2 edge with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dadoly at the number three spot.

St. Lawrence deadlocked it at 3-all when Comber defeated Morgane Flournoy, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 5 singles, but Vassar again took the lead when Becker bested Lia Petersen, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 6 singles.

The Saints went on to win the final two matches of the day to secure the team victory. At No. 4 singles, Young beat Fitzgerald in a three-set affair, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-5, before Morgan McNeal won in another three-setter, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5, against Courtney Geiss at No. 2 singles.

The Vassar women’s tennis team returns to Poughkeepsie for a home match against New Paltz on Saturday at 12 p.m. before hitting the road for five competitions.
