MSMC Blue Knights Topped by Brockport

FISHKILL – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team dropped its sixth straight game to open the season on Friday afternoon with a 17-0 loss at the hands of visiting Brockport. Junior Vincenzo Pepe and classmate Joey Pugliese each picked up a hit for the Knights.

Mount Saint Mary fell behind 7-0 after an inning and a half after Brockport plated seven unearned runs in the top of the second frame. With two out and no one on base, the Golden Eagles took advantage of a Mount Saint Mary miscue to send eight straight batters to the plate.

The visitors tacked on four more runs in the top of the third keyed by a Wesley Burghardt two-run single. Brockport scored in six of its nine at-bats in the game to move to a perfect 6-0 on the young season.
The Golden Eagles had 14 different players with a hit in the game, led by Burghardt who finished up 2-for-4 with four RBI. Joe Bender scored four times in the game, while Dane Cala went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

Pepe got the Mount’s first hit of the game with a two-out single in the second inning and Pugliese recorded the team’s only other safety, an infield single, in the bottom of the ninth. Blake Keenan drew a pair of walks on the day for the Knights.

Chris Wolfe took the loss and fell to 0-2, allowing two earned runs in 2.1 innings. Stephan Sookdeo worked a scoreless inning in relief for the Knights in the sixth. Tyler Clifford struck out 12 in moving to 2-0 for Brockport.

At 0-6 overall, Mount Saint Mary will return to action on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference tussle with Albertus Magnus. First pitch at Dutchess Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
