Knights Take Non-Conference Set From Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team ran its winning streak to a season-high three games on Sunday with a pair of non-conference wins on the road at Bard. Jimmy Papineau drove in the game winning run in the eighth inning of a 5-4 game one win and completed the sweep with a 2-1 triumph in game two.

Mount Saint Mary jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener following an RBI single from Rob Peccerillo in the second and a run scoring triple off the bat of Matt Cahill in the top of the third.

Bard answered with single runs in the home half of the third and fourth innings and moved in front for the first time in the game on a David Schlosser single up the middle in the sixth inning to push the Raptors in front 3-2.

The Knights battled back in the seventh to knot the score at 3-3 when Peccerillo scored an unearned run when Louie Rivera reached on an error with one out in the frame.

Mount Saint Mary broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning before holding on for their second straight win. Papineau delivered Ryan Hayes and Tom Huvane with a two-out base hit. Schlosser drove in a run with two outs in the home half of the inning, but Sean Betterly got a groundout to end the game.

Rivera finished the opener 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base, while Peccerillo and Papineau each picked up a pair of hits.

Schlosser paced the Bard offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with a run and a pair of RBI. Matt Lasky scored twice for the Raptors and ripped a double.

Blake Keenan made his first appearance on the mound in 2016, working 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits. Betterly picked up his first win of the year with 2.0 innings of relief work, striking out one.

In game two, the Mount jumped in front 1-0 in the first when Cahill drove in Papineau with a double and then scratched out the eventual deciding run in the fourth when Huvane scored on balk with two outs in the inning. He started the frame getting hit with a pitch and later advanced to third following a Peccerillo single and a passed ball.

The Knights were held to four hits in the second contest, with Papineau, Cahill, Peccerillo and Joey Pugliese recording safeties.

Junior Kevin Duffy threw his second straight complete game in the win, working 7.0 innings and allowing a single run on four hits. He struck out six Bard batters and walked a pair as he moved to 2-1 on the season and lowered his earned run average to 2.82.

Sunday’s sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 4-7 overall on the season. The Knights will return to action on Wednesday when they play host to New Jersey City University. First pitch at Dutchess Stadium is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
