Women’s Track Finishes Action at Arizona

TUSCON, AZ – The Vassar College women’s track team finished its spring trip on Saturday afternoon, competing in the final day of action from the Willie Williams Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona.

The Brewers had many standout performances on Saturday, which included a strong afternoon from senior Mollie Schear. The senior ran a 13.28 in the 100 meter dash, taking home 23rd overall place. Junior Lucy Balcezak jumped back into the racing world after a semester away in the fall to shine in the 800 meter run. The junior posted a 2:19.40 in the two-lap race, taking home sixth place in a field littered with many Division I runners. The time looks like it should be good enough for an ECAC Championships qualifying time. Balcezak also teamed with Eliana Tyler, Molly Crowell and Alex Gittens to run a 4:09.68 in the 4×400 relay, taking fifth overall.

In the 400 meter dash, junior Saparja Nag ran a 1:03.30 to finish 20th, while Gittens took 10th place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.75. Freshman distance specialist Christiana Prater-Lee ran a shorter race on Saturday, but still was strong in the 800 with a 2:28.62. Wiman was right behind Prater-Lee in the 800 with a time of 2:33.05, and junior Samara Roman-Holba chalked up a 2:37.96, which was five seconds faster than an indoor time she ran back in December in the 800.

“We had some strong performances that were setup with great mindsets heading into each event and followed through with great efforts,” said interim head coach Justin Harris. “we need to build from here in order for our athletes to maximize the potential that they have. It won’t be easy and we know they can do it because they have done it each year.”

The Brewers will return to campus before competing next Saturday, March 26 at the Monmouth Invitational in West Long Branch, NJ.
