WATERVLIET – Playing on back to back days with less than 24 hours between matches, the Marist men’s tennis team defeated the Siena Saints, 6-0, Sunday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 11-3 overall and remain a perfect 3-0 in conference play.
The Red Foxes got off to a slow start in doubles but we’re able to pick it up in singles play without dropping a set in all five singles matches that were completed.
Rudolf Kurz and Dylan Fletcher captured a 7-5 win for Marist over Siena’s Alessanddro Saglia and Deigo Lebron. Jan Dernic teamed up with Paulo Siracusa and defeated Evan Nierman and Jace Koretz, 6-2, and in the last doubles match, Max Darrington and Carlos Moreno pulled out a nice 6-3 victory over Alexander Reed and Peter Galante.
Marist then turned up the pressure in singles, losing just five games combined from all five singles spots. Kurz defeated the opposing number one from Siena, Saglia, 6-0, 6-1. Timo Tanzer picked up his first win of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Dernic, Fletcher, and Siracusa all won their second matches of the day in straight set victories.
“I hope we’re not just an indoors team because we played really well the last two matches inside and we played well but not as well in the doubles outside,” said head coach Tim Smith. “Again kudos to the whole team for their resiliency and I hope we continue to build on the energy level we have on and off the court.”
Up next the Red Foxes look to extend their four match winning streak as they travel to take on Quinnipiac in Hamden, Connecticut on Tuesday, April 12th.
