City of Poughkeepsie has Created an Art Commission

POUGHKEEPSIE – City of Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison announced that a Public Arts Commission has been created for the City of Poughkeepsie.

The Commission was created on July 11th, 2016 by executive order and holds the purpose and authority to advocate for the role and value of arts and culture in civic life by expanding community awareness and the presence of art in various ways.

The Mayor, along with Arts Mid-Hudson and City Council member Matthew McNamara led the creation of this Commission at the request of the Arts community, in efforts to build a direct linkage between City government and the Arts.

“On behalf of all in the Arts community, we applaud Mayor Rolison on his executive order in creating the first City of Poughkeepsie Public Arts Commission,” stated Linda Marston-Reid, Executive Director of Arts Mid-Hudson. “The Commission will promote public participation and strengthen the local economy by attracting and promoting local artists, encourage cultural tourism, and create opportunities for training and employment in a range of creative fields.”

“We as a community need to recognize that the Arts are an essential part of the City of Poughkeepsie’s cultural vitality,” stated 8th Ward Council member Matthew McNamara.

The commission will consist of seven (7) members: three (3) appointed by the Mayor, three (3) appointed by the Common Council, and (1) shall be appointed by majority vote of the Commission.
