Marist Picks Up Sixth MAAC Win Over Rider

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist volleyball team picked up its third consecutive and sixth win overall with a 3-1 triumph over the Rider Broncs at McCann Arena on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 6-11 (6-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the loss drops Rider to 8-11 (2-5 MAAC).

Megan Fergus had a match high 11 kills, while Lexi Millington led the day with 25 digs and four service aces and Taylor van der Biezen finished with a team high 32 assists.

The Broncs jumped out to the early 4-0 and 5-2 lead to open the first set before the Red Foxes won three straight points to even it up 5-5. Rider rattled of 10 of the next 13 points to lead 15-8 and after Marist brought it to 15-12, the Broncs took 10 of the next 14 points to win the first set 25-16.

After Rider jumped out to the 3-0 lead to open the second set, the Red Foxes trimmed the deficit to 6-4 in favor of the Broncs. Both teams traded points until Rider won three straight to take a 12-7 lead before Marist won seven of the next nine to tie it up 14-14. Down 20-17, the Red Foxes won eight of the final 10 points to win the set 25-21 and even the match at one set apeice.

The third set proved to be more back-and-forth action with 11 ties between the two teams and neither side holding a lead larger than three. A kill by Kelsey Ediger gave Marist the 20-18 lead late but the Broncs tooks the next four points to go ahead 22-20. After Marist tied it at 22-22, Rider won two straight to take a 24-22 lead but the Red Foxes were too strong, taking the next three points and five of the next seven to win the set 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final set, the two teams again traded points with Marist holding an 8-5 lead early. The Broncs brought it to 11-10 but that was as close as they would get as the Red Foxes took control of the match and won 13 of the next 22 points to win the fourth set by a score of 25-19 and the match by a final scored of 3-1.
