Mount Saint Mary Scores Conference Road Win

PATCHOGUE – In its first meeting with the Golden Eagles since the 2015 Skyline Conference Championship game, the Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Soccer team traveled to St. Joseph’s-L.I. on Saturday and came away with a 2-1 victory. Freshman Theresa Stinson and junior Emily Scheuer were the goal scorers for the Knights.

Following a scoreless first half, Mount Saint Mary broke through with the first goal of the game just under six minutes into the second stanza. Stinson potted her fourth goal of the season at the 50:54 mark of the contest when she collected a rebound in the box and buried the shot to open the scoring in the game.

The Knights would maintain the pressure in the second half and would get what proved to be the game winner of the foot of Scheuer with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation time. She took a free-kick from 25 yards out and deposited her team leading fifth goal of the season at 79:15 to give the Knights a two goal cushion.

The Scheuer goal would prove to be a big one, as the Golden Eagles got on the board in the final minute of regulation to cut the Knights’ advantage in half. Christina Gagliardi converted her eighth goal of the season with 45 seconds left. To bring St. Joseph’s to within a goal.
Mount Saint Mary carried the play in the second half, outshooting St. Joseph’s 21-4 in the second 45 minutes on its way to a 28-6 advantage for the game. The Knight put 16 shots on target in the game and posted an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Allison Jones and Destiny Ribadeneyr led the Knights with six shots each, with Bridget McKeever adding five and Stinson recording four. In all, seven different Knights posted at least two shots in the game.

Junior Mary Riley picked up the win in goal, making a pair of saves. She did not allow a goal in just over 84 minutes of work, raising her save percentage to .671. Samantha Wedderburn was under siege much of the day, finishing with 14 saves for the Golden Eagles.

Saturday’s win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 5-8 overall and to 4-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will have their second long layoff of the season and will not return to game action until an October 19 road contest at Mount Saint Vincent.
