Marist Has Win Streak Snapped at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, CT – The Marist men’s basketball team suffered a 77-63 loss at Quinnipiac in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Sunday afternoon at TD Bank Sports Center. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Red Foxes.

“We made a good run in the second half,” head coach Mike Maker said. “But we dug ourselves too deep a hole. We didn’t guard well enough, and we didn’t rebound well enough.”

Sophomore forward Ryan Funk led the Red Foxes with a career-high 23 points. Funk shot 7-for-14 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart added 18 points, three assists, three steals, and two rebounds. Freshman center Tobias Sjoberg scored a career-high nine points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Brian Parker paced Marist with six rebounds and five assists.

Quinnipiac opened the game by scoring the first seven points, and the Bobcats never trailed. Their lead reached as high as 20 in the first half before the Red Foxes scored the final three points of the half, making the score 42-25 going to the locker room.

The Red Foxes clawed back into the game thanks to an 18-4 run over the span of 4:13 early in the second half. Parker assisted on Marist’s first four baskets of the second half, and then back-to-back three-pointers by Funk brought the Red Foxes to within five at 48-43 with 14:50 remaining. Quinnipiac called timeout, and then answered with an 8-0 run while holding Marist without a field goal for 4:07. A pair of free throws by sophomore swingman Kristinn Palsson cut the Red Foxes’ deficit to seven with 7:17 left, but Marist trailed by double digits throughout the final five minutes.

Chaise Daniels led Quinnipiac with 17 points and produced a game-high four steals. Peter Kiss contributed 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds off the bench.

Marist shot 22-for-50 (.440) for the game. The Red Foxes were 13-for-24 (.542) from the field in the second half. However, Marist was just 13-for-26 (.500) from the free-throw line, as compared to Quinnipiac going 15-for-21 (.714). The Red Foxes committed 16 turnovers, while the Bobcats had 12.

Marist is now 4-5 on the season and 1-1 in the MAAC. Quinnipiac is 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC.

Marist will return to non-conference play until the end of the month. The Red Foxes’ next contest will be at America East foe Albany on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
