POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist men’s basketball team fell by a score of 84-77, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference home contest against the Siena Saints on Saturday night. With the loss the Red Foxes move to 6-20 (3-12 in the MAAC), and the Saints move to 12-14 (9-6 in the MAAC).

Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart led the Red Foxes in scoring, totaling 24 points, finishing 9-for-14 from the floor. Sophomore guard Brian Parker added 16 points in 29 minutes for Marist.

As a team, Marist went 26-for-55 (.473) from the floor, hit nine of their 21(.429) three-point attempts, and scored 30 points in the paint. The Saints were 28-for-64 (.438) from the floor, 4-for-16 (.250) from outside the arc, and went 24-for-32 from the free throw line.

The teams traded baskets early in the first half, with Marist netting most of their points from inside the paint. Parker got the scoring started for the Red Foxes, and sophomore forward Ryan Funk added points from behind the three-point line early in the first half.

Kentrall Brooks helped keep Marist ahead with nine minutes left in the half with a follow-up dunk quickly followed by a block on defense. The Red Foxes looked to attack the hoop throughout the half, scoring 20 points in the paint. Both teams were able to block shots on defense, with each team blocking four. Strong defense by both teams, and consistent scoring led to a 36-36 halftime score.

Sophomore forward Isaiah Lamb led Marist in scoring in the half, netting both of his three-point attempts. Funk also had five points and two rebounds in 17 minutes of action in the first half.

The second half opened up with more back-and-forth scoring chances for both teams. A huge transition three by Funk gave Marist a 49-48 lead with 13:07 to go and continued inside pressure helped keep the game close.

Both teams quickly found themselves in foul trouble, combining for 20 free-throw attempts halfway through the second period of play. Three pointers by Hart kept the Red Foxes close, but inside scoring kept the Saints on top. The Red Foxes were able to cut down a nine-point deficit, and were within two points in the final minute thanks to a three-pointer by Mitchell. A strong take to the hoop by Hart would keep the Red Foxes chances alive but ensuing free throws would ice the game for Siena.

Hart led the Red Foxes in scoring during the second half with 18 points, while Lamb added four rebounds and three assists.

Marquis Wright scored 21 points in 40 minutes to lead Siena’s offense, and Nico Clareth added 18 points and 10 rebounds.
