HONOLULU, HI – The Marist softball team defeated Purdue of the Big Ten Conference by a score of 4-1 in its final game of the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Saturday.
Red-shirt senior Jessica Van Alphen (5-2) pitched a complete game to earn the victory. Van Alphen struck out four and did not walk a batter. She scattered six hits, and threw 58 of her 91 pitches for strikes. She only allowed one runner to get past first base after the first inning.
Each team scored a run in the top of the first. Sophomore center fielder Casey Page led off the game with an infield single, and came around to score on an infield error. An RBI double by Purdue’s Mallory Baker tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.
The Red Foxes broke the tie in the top of the third on a two-out, two-run double by freshman first baseman Amanda Sartori, which brought home junior designated player Gabrielle Kelliher and junior left fielder Kourtney Paul. Marist then added a run in the fourth as junior third baseman Brittany Colombo reached on a leadoff single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Rebecca Freeman.
Page, Colombo, and Freeman paced the Red Foxes with two hits apiece. Marist did not commit an error, and outhit Purdue, 9-6.
Marist is now 13-10 overall. The Red Foxes won four of their last five in Hawaii, and allowed just seven runs in their last five games.
