IRVINE, CA – The No. 40 ranked Vassar College women’s tennis team completed a very successful Spring Break trip to California on Saturday afternoon, topping Principia College 5-0 in action from Irvine, CA and University High School.
The win was Vassar’s fourth straight, as VC has won six of its last seven matches with the lone loss coming to Bowdoin College on March 12. The Brewer’s strength was on display in doubles action, as all three pairs teams for Vassar picked up 8-0 victories. Senior Shayna Becker and freshman Tara Edwards completed the sweep at No. 1 to send VC into singles with a 3-0 lead.
Prior to that win, junior Kate Christensen and sophomore Morgane Flournoy defeated Hallie Jones and Gracie Buchanan 8-0 to start the scoring while Dasha Ivenitsky and Connie Yoo also rolled to the 8-0 win. With the match being played to completion, only two matches would be needed to give the Brewers the win.
Edwards was untested at No. 3 singles, knocking off Nathalie DeLoach 6-0, 6-0, setting up the match clinching win by Becker. In her match, Becker cruised to the 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles to lift VC to the win. All four of the other matches were being led by VC when the match was stopped.
Vassar will now return home for a home Liberty League matchup with St. Lawrence University Saturday, April 1 at 10 a.m. on either Josselyn Tennis Courts or in the Walker Field House.
