Funding Secured to Bolster Police Departments

Assemblyman Frank Skartados (D-Milton) announced that he secured vital funding to help several local police departments buy needed equipment. The funds are made available through the Edward Byrne Memorial/Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program, which provides federal grants to assist law enforcement and crime prevention programs.

“Upgrading technology and adding patrol vehicles can cut down response times for police departments and increase public safety,” said Skartados. “This funding makes that possible without adding another burden to our already stretched local budgets.”

The City of Newburgh Police Department will receive $17,500 to add police cameras to areas with high rates of gun violence. The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department will also receive $17,500 to purchase laptop computers for patrol cars. In addition, the City of Beacon Police Department will be granted funding to assist in the purchase a marked patrol vehicle.

“Police officers put their lives on the line to protect our families each and every day,” said Skartados. “The least we can do is give them the best tools available to do their jobs effectively.”
