NRC Makes History at NYS Rowing Championship

SARATOGA SPRINGS – On May 13th and 14th, the Newburgh Rowing Club brought 4 crews to the NYS Rowing Championship at Saratoga Rowing Association, thanks to a grant from America Rows and Swims Newburgh and a Championship Grant from USRowing, said Coach Ed Kennedy, Head Coach of the Newburgh Rowing club.

Three of four boats advanced from the preliminaries to the finals, said Kennedy.  “We are very pleased to announce that our Girls Freshman 4+ won Silver Medals in the NYS Club Rowing Championship, missing out on Gold by only one second.”

“My hat goes off to all of the crews who raced that day, they faced very difficult conditions with cold temperatures and a driving rain,” said Coach Kennedy.

“All of our girls boats performed very well,”  said Juliana LoBiondo, director of America Rows and Swims Newburgh (ARASN).  “The story of the Girls Freshman 4+ race is truly compelling. They are all student ambassadors, meaning they reside in the City of Newburgh and row on scholarships made possible by ARASN.   They learned to swim with us in fifth grade and have been with us since they were 11 years old.   Every year, these girls get stronger, faster, and accomplish more. This is the first all-Latina crew to medal in the NYS Rowing Championship in a 4+ and we could not be more proud of this accomplishment.   We are very thankful to USRowing for the Championship Grant which allowed our athletes to participate in our State championship.

“There are several local races left in our season and we plan to keep burying our blades and moving ourselves forward,” said Coach Kennedy.
