Skartados Backs Measure Ensuring Affordable Health Care

Assemblyman Frank Skartados (D-Milton) announced that legislation he co-sponsored to deliver universal health care for New Yorkers passed the Assembly (A.4738).

“Tens of thousands of our family members, friends and neighbors could lose their health insurance if the Affordable Care Act is repealed and replaced at the federal level,” Skartados said. “Without proper coverage, people may have to miss treatments or undertake massive debt just to get the care they need. We can’t stand for that. Access to affordable health care is a matter of life and death for many in the Hudson Valley.”

If the Affordable Care Act is repealed, over 37,000 Orange County residents could lose coverage. Another 25,000 residents in Dutchess County and over 19,000 in Ulster County could also lose their health insurance. No one should have to face bankruptcy if they get sick or injured, Skartados noted.

The New York Health Act would establish a single-payer health care system known as New York Health. New York Health would expand coverage eligibility to include all residents, regardless of wealth, income, age or pre-existing condition, and would eliminate all co-pays, deductibles and other charges to patients.

“Many Hudson Valley families are concerned with the high cost of living in our region,” said Skartados. “The NY Health Act would ensure everyone has access to the medical care they need without expensive insurance premiums. It would end confusing doctor bills and ensure your wellness comes first.”
