Omari Shakur Receives Democrat Endorsement

NEWBURGH – Community Activist and Leader Omari Shakur has personally registered over 5000 voters in the poorest, drug ridden neighborhoods in the City of Newburgh and is well known on every block in the city. He ran for mayor in 2011 to provide an alternative to the insider candidates linked to the financial and policy failures that plagued the city.

Shakur is loved in the community because he has consistently rallied his community and spoken out publicly for 1) the creation and maintenance of truly affordable housing, 2) decent, living wage jobs, particularly for residents of his district and 3) especially for fair and equitable policing. He is currently working to turn out the vote for the election of candidates, that have the heart of their community as their top priority.

A 2011 endorsement reads, “Omari Shakur is Newburgh’s best hope for a true change in the city’s direction – from a place where the powers-that-be profit from the poverty and unmet needs of the people, to a place where the people are empowered with the tools and leadership to solve their own problems – and to do so together! … The City has thousands of people looking only for a chance to work, along with the training and tools necessary to make the opportunity to do so a reality.”

Shakur, last Tuesday night at the Orange County Democratic Committee Meeting, held in Wallkill, NY, secured the endorsement against three other candidates with a total of 389.5 weighted votes.

Endorsed Candidate Omari Shakur is excited to receive the opportunity and trust of the City of Newburgh’s Community, He is passionate, about the City of Newburgh, and looks forward to this campaign and being the next 4th Legislative District Orange County Legislator. He will be a protector and advocate for the City.
