Vassar Claims 3-1 Win Over Mount Saint Mary

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Vassar College men’s soccer team improved their record to 2-0 in 2017 with a 3-1 victory over Mount Saint Mary on Gordon Field.

The Brewers went down early when the Knights converted a penalty kick in the ninth minute, but the team responded with three unanswered goals to come out ahead.

“We kept to our game plan really well,” said Head Coach Andy Jennings. “We came back and scored a couple goals [after being down early]. It was really good in the fact that we were a goal down and came back, the attitude, determination and fight was all there.”

Mount Saint Mary was able to take the early lead when goalkeeper Matt Marcelino came out and drew a yellow card for sliding into the Knights attacker in the box. Joey Dolan was awarded the penalty kick and made it count and put his squad up 1-0.

The Brewers would tie the game up in the 37th minute when a string of passes led to a Tanner Sands goal. Jose Novas played the ball in to Tyler Gilmore who flicked it up to Sands who put it away for the equalizing goal.

The 1-1 score would stand as the two sides went into the locker rooms at halftime. But out of the break, Hayden Van Brewer would put his side on top for good. In the 55th minute, Novas passed to Van Brewer who dribbled left and created space in front of his defender before unleashing a shot into the top corner of the goal.

Then just about 12 minutes later, Mattie Mrlik controlled a Toby Stansell pass and shot it around the Knights keeper for the final goal of the day.

Van Brewer led all players with six total shots and five on goal, while Mrlik had five shots and Tyler Gilmore added four of his own. In total, the Brewers had 23 shots with 14 put on target, compared to just six total shots for Mount Saint Mary.

Matt Marcelino earned his first start of the season, making one save in his 76 minutes of action before giving way to Luke Lefeber who made his Vassar debut between the pipes. The freshman also picked up one save in his limited amount of work.

Vassar heads on the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, September 6 at 6:00 p.m. when they take on Manhattanville in Purchase, NY.
