Legislator Virginia Perez Statement on DACA

“I am extremely disappointed in our President for taking such an adverse action towards our nation’s most vulnerable – our children.  As an immigrant, I can think of little else that could instill such horror and fear into the life of an immigrant child that has believed he or she was safe here in America.  As a Legislator, I am appalled that our Country’s top elected official, who swore to serve and protect us, would unilaterally undo the protections that were put in place specifically to protect children.  I will continue to do whatever I can in my legislative capacity to support and protect our immigrant community and especially our children.

“I came here as a 10 year-old immigrant child. I was not given a choice about coming to America, but I thank God every day that my parents made the decision to bring us here.  It was hard for them and for me.

“I was told that my green card would not protect me from being deported.  The people who told me that also defrauded my parents, scamming them out of their life savings when they promised them assistance to gain citizenship.  Fear around my immigration status was a constant anxiety for me as a child – a feeling I remember to this day.

“For President Trump to target children – who are here through no choice of their own – and threaten their dream that they will be able to contribute great things to this country – will only intensify the fear and anxiety that these innocent kids live with.”

Spanish Translation: “Estoy sumamente decepcionada con nuestro Presidente por tomar acción tan adversa hacia los más vulnerables de nuestra nación – nuestros niños. Como inmigrante, no puedo pensar en otra cosa que pueda inculcar tal horror y miedo en la vida de un niño inmigrante que ha creído que estaba seguro aquí en América. Como Legisladora me consterna que el máximo funcionario electo de nuestro país, que juró servir y protegernos, unilateralmente deshace de las protecciones que se pusieron en marcha específicamente para proteger a los niños. Continuaré haciendo lo que sea dentro de mi capacidad legislativa para apoyar y proteger a nuestra comunidad inmigrante y especialmente a nuestros niños.

“Vine aquí como niña inmigrante de 10 años. No me dieron la opción de venir a América, pero agradezco a Dios todos los días que mis padres tomaron la decisión de traernos aquí. Fue difícil para ellos y para mí.

“La gente me decía que mi tarjeta de residencia no me iba a proteger de deportación. Las personas que me decían eso también defraudaron a mis padres de sus ahorros de vida con la promesa de que nos ayudarían a obtener la ciudadanía. El temor a mi estado de inmigración me causaba ansiedad constante como niña – un sentimiento que todavía recuerdo hoy día.

“El Presidente Trump se dirige a los niños – quienes vinieron aquí sin opción propia – y amenaza sus sueños de hacer grandes contribuciones a este país lo cual solamente intensificará el miedo y la ansiedad que permanece en estos niños inocentes.”
