Skartados Secures Funding For Bridge

BEACON – Assemblyman Frank Skartados (D-Milton) announced that he secured $500,000 for the reconstruction of the Tioronda Bridge in Beacon. The funding was awarded by the New York State Municipal Capital Project Multi-Modal Grant program.

“Tioronda Bridge isn’t just another bridge – it’s one of the most scenic places in Beacon,” said Skartados. “With Beacon growing the way it has, this haven for enjoying nature is needed now more than ever.”

Tioronda Bridge, which spans Fishkill Creek, was built between 1869 and 1873 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. After falling into disuse and neglect, it was closed to traffic in 1985 and disassembled in 2006. Residents of Beacon have been calling for its rebuilding in order to have access to parkland and trails south of the city.

Given its historic nature and park setting, Skartados proposed that the new bridge be built with a pedestrian walkway and one lane of low-speed vehicular traffic. The New York State Department of Transportation believes his proposal satisfies grant requirements that the bridge be made accessible to vehicles.

While the funding won’t completely cover the costs of the proposed bridge, it will go a long way toward getting the project off the ground, noted Skartados. He stands ready to assist city leaders in securing remaining funds to make the project a reality.

“The secret is out about Beacon as more and more families put down roots here,” said Skartados. “The Tioronda Bridge is part of our history and provides a needed refuge for the community. With projects like this, we’ll ensure that Beacon continues to be a great place to raise a family.”
