Primary: Omari Shakur Wins in Orange County

NEWBURGH/KINGSTON – Community activist Omari Shakur, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Newburgh, will be on the ballot this November as a candidate for Orange County Legislature in District 4.  Unofficial primary results show Shakur winning the Democratic line, by six votes, 288 to 282, over Kevindaryan Lujan.

Elsewhere in Orange County, Democrat Sparrow Tobin defeated two other candidates in Middletown’s Fourth Ward.

In Ulster County, two incumbent county legislators lost their major party lines
Democrat John Parete, a former legislature chairman, was overwhelmed by activist Kathy Nolan, 426 to 182.  Parete also lost on the Republican line but will have the Conservative and Independence lines in November.  Parete’s son, Richard, a former legislator, was overwhelmed by Douglas Adams, 305 to 52.

Long-time incumbent Democrat Peter Loughran lost to Lynn Eckert, 304 to 110.
