Mount Scores Two Victories at Misericordia

DALLAS, PA. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Volleyball team pushed its winning streak to three matches on Saturday with a pair of five set non-conference victories. The Knights rallied past Misericordia 25-18, 14-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-9 in the opening match of the day and then outlasted John Jay 26-28, 25-21, 19-25, 30-28, 15-11 to close the afternoon. Senior Megan Willams finished the day with 23 kills for the Knights.

Mount Saint Mary 3 – Misericordia 2

The Knights put away 39 kills against the Cougars and although they hit just .109 for the match, hit an efficient .312 in the decisive game five victory. The Cougars held a 58-39 advantage in kills in the match, but committed eight more attack errors than the Knights and saw the Mount hold a 9-5 edge in total team blocks.

The Knights saw Misericorda rally in the fourth set with a four point run to pull to within 22-21, but the Mount scored three of the final four points, including a kill from Williams, to even the match at 2-2. In the deciding set, the Mount used a five point run to open a 6-2 lead and finished off the win with back-to-back winners from Madelyn Barberan and Renee Hydo.

Williams led the team in the win with 12 kills and hit an efficient .400 while adding five blocks. Barberan finished up with 10 winners, three aces and three blocks. She finished her team leading fourth double-double of the season with 10 digs.

Nicole Spinelli added five kills and six blocks to the winning effort with Jackie Survilla adding three aces and nine digs. Kim Gries handed out 35 assists and lifted nine digs, while Julimar Figueroa led the team with 15 digs.

Misericordia was led by 16 kills and a .448 attack percentage from Coleby Charlier and 10 winners from Michelle Sehested. Karley May led the team with 19 assists and 14 digs.

Mount Saint Mary 3 – John Jay 2

The Knights and Bloodhounds went the distance in the second match of the day with the Mount posting a season-high 50 kills in the victory. The Knights finished the match with a 17-12 edge in service aces, while John Jay edged the team in total team blocking 10-9.

Trailing 2-1 in the match and 27-26 in the fourth set, the Mount scored four of the final five points of the frame to even the match at 2-2. Survilla aided the run with a service ace, while Morgan Burke and Hydo finished off the set with back-to-back kills.

The Mount found itself down 7-4 in the fifth frame before a 4-1 run evened the score at 8-8.

A five points run keyed by a pair of Figueroa aces pushed the Mount in front 13-9 with a Williams kill finishing off the team’s second win of the day.

Burke reached double-figures in kills for the third time this season with a team-high 12 winners to go along with five blocks. Williams finished off 11 winners against John Jay and added four total blocks for the Knights.

Barberan and Ally Klesin each put away six kills in the win with Spinelli closing out a strong all-around day with four kills, five aces, two blocks and six digs.

Gries reached 40 assists in a match for the second time this season with a season-high 43 helpers, adding two aces and 11 digs. Barberan led the team with 17 digs, with Figueroa rounding out the day with 15 digs and three service aces.

John Jay received a match-high 27 kills from Brittany Steele who added 17 digs. Kimberly Rodriguez led all players in the match with 48 assists, adding 14 digs, while Anna Gevorgyan leading all players with 20 digs.

Saturday’s sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 6-14 overall on the season. The Knights return home on October 4 when they return to Skyline Conference play against USMMA. Match time with the Mariners is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
