Knights Split Two Skyline Conference Matches

RIVERDALE – The Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Volleyball team continued Skyline Conference play on Sunday, falling to the College of Mount Saint Vincent 18-25, 12-25, 11-25 before collecting its first league win of the season with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Old Westbury. Senior Julimar Figueroa finished the day with 32 digs for the Knights.

Mount Saint Vincent 3 – MSMC 0
Mount Saint Mary held the lead twice in Sunday’s opening match, taking a 1-0 lead and a 3-2 advantage in the middle frame. The Dolphins responded with a 6-0 run to move in front 8-3 and take the lead for good in the contest.

Nicole Spinelli and Madelyn Barberan led the team with five kills each, with Ally Klesin adding four winners for the Knights. Spinelli added two aces and a pair of blocks with Barberan lifting three digs.

Junior Kim Gries handed out 16 assists to go along with a pair of blocks, with Morgan Burke posting a block and three kills. Figueroa led the team with 11 digs against the Dolphins.

Mount Saint Vincent was led by 16 kills and a .424 attack percentage from Tara Maloney and eight kills from Sayde McDermott. Maria Leineweber posted seven winners, nine digs and three blocks, while Nicole Henderson handed out 32 assists for the Dolphins.

Mount Saint Vincent finished the match with a 36-24 advantage in kills, hitting .365 as a team, and a 10-4 edge in service aces. Total team blocks in the contest were even at 4-4.

MSMC 3 – Old Westbury 0
The Knights responded with their first league win of the season against the Panthers. The Mount put away 31 kills in the victory against only 20 for Old Westbury and held a convincing 12-4 edge in service aces to go along with a 5-1 edge in total team blocks.

Burke led the Mount with seven kills in the win, adding a block, with Spinelli putting away six kills to go along with a pair of service aces. Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.Y.) contributed five kills, while Renee Hydo and Barberan finished with four winners apiece.

Gries added 23 assists in the win and a team-high three service aces with Figueroa leading the way with 21 digs.

Old Westbury received four kills from Sidasia Johnson and 14 assists from Kyraleigh Zinnel. Jazmine Ortiz led the Panthers with nine digs.

Sunday’s split moves Mount Saint Mary to 7-16 overall on the season and to 1-3 in Skyline Conference play.
