Marist Overtakes Quinnipiac In Four Setter

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist volleyball team erased an early deficit to take down Quinnipiac for the second time this season Oct. 15 in McCann Arena. Set scores were 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-17.

Marist improved to 10-11 overall and 7-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play while the Bobcats’ loss brought them to 6-18 overall and 5-6 in conference play.

Turning Points:
In a back and forth first set, both sides traded three-point runs and Marist went ahead 16-13 on consecutive kills from senior Kelsey Ediger. Quinnipiac came right back to tie the score, but Marist pulled ahead 21-19. Coming out of their timeout the Bobcats ripped off six of the next seven points in between two Red Foxes’ breathers to take a 1-0 lead.

Some unforced errors put Marist back in the match, as it jumped in front 6-3. Quinnipiac evened the score three times, including once at 17, before the Red Foxes rattled off a 5-0 run that would be enough to tie the match.

With senior Sydney Rojek at the service line, Marist was once again able to create an insurmountable deficit for the Bobcats and force early timeouts from them in the third set. A 7-1 run that featured kills from three different Red Fox hitters made it 11-4 in Marist’s favor. Quinnipiac would cut the deficit to four but the Red Foxes’ defense held it at bay.

Marist completed the comeback by leading the entire final frame. It notched the first four points of the stanza capped by the third and final service ace of the day from freshman Sarah Austin. Marist rolled on with a five-point outburst that created an eight-point cushion to give it their third home victory.
Marist will play the third match of its home stand against Siena at 7 p.m. Oct. 20.
