Teta Scores Season-High 15 Points in League Win

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Vassar women’s basketball team grabbed their first Liberty League win of the season with a 73-66 victory over William Smith on Saturday afternoon in the AFC.
Nicole Teta poured in a season-high 15 points for the Brewers offense, shooting 50% from field and 3-5 from deep. Three other Vassar student-athletes notched double figure scoring as well, as the Brewers recorded their second highest scoring output of the season.

The Brewers held the lead for most of the game and really ran away with the game in the second half. Sophie Nick and Samarah Cook combined for the Brewers first five points of the game to give their side the early advantage.

After Olivia Hughes knocked down a layup to put the Herons up by two, Maeve Sussman answered with a layup of her own and converted the resulting free throw. Isa Peczuh then chipped in her first three of the game, to spark a quick Brewer scoring run to end the quarter.

With a four-point lead at the start of the second, the Herons kept the game close and outscored Vassar 16-15 over those 10 minutes to close the gap to just three.

William Smith then scored four quick points to open the final half and get within one. But Kim Romanoff knocked down a three-pointer to give Vassar a four-point lead.

That shot ignited a 16-6 run for the Brewers as they closed out the third quarter to take a commanding 14-point lead into the final 10 minutes.

Although the Herons outscored the Brewers by seven in the final quarter, Vassar held strong converting 12 of their free throw attempts. For the game, the team shot 89.5% (17-19) from the charity stripe.

The Brewer bench played an important role on the day, recording 30 total points. Nine Vassar players tallied a point, all contributing to the Brewer win.
