Black Knights Drop Road Tilt to Marquette

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Army West Point women’s basketball team dropped a non-conference road tilt to Marquette, 83-53, on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles (5-4), who were receiving votes in the latest AP rankings, fell behind early in the first quarter, but recovered quickly and never looked back en route to the win against Army (6-4).

Daizjah Morris paced the Black Knights with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Morgann Yancey followed with 10 points, while Libby Tacka and Madison Hovren finished with nine and eight, respectively.

Marquette struggled from the floor in the early going, burying just one of its first five shots. The Black Knights took advantage of the Golden Eagles’ shooting woes and went ahead 8-2 after Morris swiped the ball from Lauren Van Kleunen and scored on a fastbreak layup.
With their constant full-court pressure and ability to use the dribble drive to get into the paint, the Golden Eagles quickly erased the early deficit with a 16-3 run. Marquette turned around the poor start offensively and finished the first quarter shooting the ball over 50 percent.
Marquette carried a six-point lead into the second quarter, but extended it double-digits by outscoring Army 17-6 over the first five minutes. The first 26 of Marquette’s 28 points came from inside the paint.
The Black Knights chipped into the deficit and put up eight unanswered points to pull within 11, 35-24, but still went into the half trailing by 14.
Through the first 3:21 of the third quarter, the two sides traded baskets, but a 14-2 Marquette run gave the Golden Eagles a 23-point lead. Army picked up some momentum late, after outscoring Marquette 6-2 in the final 1:18 of the frame.
In the final quarter, the Black Knights got as close as 16, but Marquette finished strong and maintained its insurmountable lead to capture the win.

Up next, the Black Knights will have some time off before hosting St. Joseph’s Brooklyn on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at Christl Arena.
