Workers Definitely Need Stronger Protections

“The deadly explosion and fire at Verla International’s New Windsor factory a few weeks ago is a startling reminder of the need for stronger safety measures for factory employees and those working with or around hazardous chemicals. We must not only protect workers, but also hold employers accountable when they fail to provide safe working conditions.

“The Verla factory had been repeatedly cited for occupational safety violations, including one that may have caused the explosions. Some workers also complained about being exposed to dangerous chemicals while lacking the training and protective equipment to stay safe. We can’t allow companies to put the lives of their employees at risk

“My heart is with the victims of this tragic accident and their families and it is my hope that everyone can quickly return to a safe work environment. I will continue to monitor the situation and determine what legislation might be necessary. Public officials and local governments at all levels must work together to help prevent tragedies like this from being repeated.  We should never back down when it comes to workers’ rights, and keep fighting to ensure they can feel safe whenever they clock in.”
