NEWBURGH – Parents are invited to attend a “Newburgh Baby Shower & Wee One Welcome” on Sat., Jan. 13 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Newburgh Free Library (124 Grand Street). The Library encourages expectant parents, new parents, and parents with young children under age three to attend the free event, which shares parenting and early childhood development information in the festive, celebratory atmosphere of a baby shower. Numerous local agencies, including Newburgh Healthy Families and Cornerstone Family Healthcare, are partnering with the Library on this program.
The event will also feature the Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s early learning initiative, The Newburgh Basics—a locally-run campaign that’s inspired by the fact that 80% of brain development happens in the first three years of life. Everyday interactions between children, their parents, and other caregivers, therefore, should ideally provide abundant opportunities to give children a healthy, happy start in life.
“Science is catching up with what libraries and caregivers have always known: early literacy nourishes a baby’s brain for a bright start,” said Sara Scoggan, Early Childhood & Parenting Librarian in the Youth Services Department.
Attendees will discover more about the parenting collection and early literacy programs available at the Library; they’ll also be able to connect with many community, regional, and local agencies. Tips and tools to make reading to children more fun will be given, and children will enjoy stories, games and active play. Registration is not required for this drop-in program.
