Vassar Tops King’s In Non-Conference Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Vassar women’s basketball team earned their sixth win of the season with a 70-61 victory over King’s College in the Jamie Lynn Roberts – Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament hosted by Catholic University.

Sophomore Sophie Nick led all scorers with 25 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She also reached the 20 point plateau in back to back games as the forward tallied 23 on Friday night.

Nicole Teta was the only other Brewer in double figures with 11 points all to her own, but Vassar scored in a variety of ways as eight other players registered a point against the Monarchs.

The game started off close as the two sides traded baskets in the opening quarter. Vassar began to pull away late in the frame when a three from Isa Peczuh put her team up by eight. Lindsey Dippre answered with a three of her own to cut the lead to five by the end of the first.

The Brewer offense held steady as Ariella Rosenthal opened the second quarter with back to back free throws. King’s would cut the lead down to four, but free throws from Rosenthal and Nick kept the advantage in their favor. Teta’s three pointer at the midway point of the stanza put the Brewers up by eight and their lead held as Skylar Schmid had a fast break layup right before the halftime buzzer to put keep the Brewers up by seven.

King’s came out strong in the third period, outscoring Vassar 20-14 and cutting the deficit to just one with 10 minutes to play. The Monarchs eventually took the lead back at the 6:41 mark in the fourth, but Kim Romanoff tied the game at 54 moments later and the Brewers never looked back. Free throws again from Rosenthal and Nick gave the lead back to Vassar for good.

The Brewers are back into Liberty League action when they next take floor at the AFC on Friday, January 5 at 6:00 p.m. against Clarkson.
