Update on Middle East After Congressional Visit

MONTGOMERY – After returning from a seven-day Congressional Delegation Trip to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the United Arab Emirates, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) provide a briefing to the Orange County Chamber of Commerce and other interested parties on his trip and the state of affairs in the Middle East after a decade and a half of American military intervention in the region on Friday at the Orange County Chamber.

The Congressional Delegation Trip (CoDel Gallagher) occurred from December 23-30, 2017 and took members of Congress to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the United Arab Emirates. The purpose of the trip was to conduct oversight on U.S. force posture, regional dynamics, and counter-terrorism efforts associated with Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria, Operation Resolute Support in Afghanistan, and U.S. strategic security efforts with coalition partners United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

Maloney spent well over an hour discussing his meetings with America’s fighting forces, military leaders and government officials in those countries.

He said the war against terrorism is continuing in Iraq and Afghanistan with domestic forces assuming much of the effort.

“I cannot give you any guarantees, but what I can tell you is we are keeping the lid on in both places, it’s costing some money. We aren’t taking a lot of casualties thank God. The local forces are doing most of the fighting and the dying and if we can make progress under that model, then it is something we should keep supporting.”

Maloney said the war in the Middle East is going to be “decades long.”
