NEWBURGH – The Healthy Community Outreach Project, an asthma education and prevention initiative spearheaded by Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley, presented a kickoff celebration in the Community Room at the Mullins apartments on Saturday.
The event served as the official launch of the Healthy Community Outreach Project for residents of the Mullins housing development in Newburgh. City of Newburgh Third Ward Council Member Jonathan Jacobson was in attendance along with At-Large Council Member Hillary Rayford.
Food, music and entertainment were provided, and educational materials about the Healthy Community Outreach Project and its various partners were available.
Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley is the lead partner in implementing the Healthy Community Outreach Project in partnerships with the Newburgh Housing Authority, the American Lung Association of the Northeast, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Children’s Medical Group, Orange County Health Department’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program and Ace Drugs.
According to the City of Newburgh and New York State Department of Health, the rate of emergency room visits for asthma in Newburgh is three times that of the rest of Orange County, and twice that of New York State (per 10,000 residents, for all ages). The Healthy Community Outreach Project will be implemented at the Mullins to address asthma triggers and work to reduce residents’ asthma flareups and ultimately decrease hospital admissions and visits to urgent care. It is the goal of the Healthy Community Outreach Project to engage the Mullins residents in gaining knowledge about asthma and its related diseases, reducing asthma flareups and triggers, and the importance of medication adherence.
