MIDDLETOWN – SUNY Orange will headline its Black History Month programming with a screening of the film “13th” and a lecture by Schadrac St. Louis on Haiti and its contributions to the Americas.
St. Louis, director of operations for HeartinHaiti.org for the past seven years, will deliver “A Brief History of Haiti and Its Contributions to the Americas” from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22 in the Gerry Forum in the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering on the College’s Middletown campus. The lecture and presentation will be streamed live to SUNY Orange’s Newburgh campus and can be viewed in Room 307 of the Tower Building.
In partnership with the Orange County Human Rights Commission, the College has scheduled two screenings of “13th”, which will be accompanied by a discussion of this thought-provoking documentary in which scholars, activists and politicians analyze the criminalization of African Americans and the U.S prison boom. Directed by Ava DuVernay, the film explores the ‘intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States.
Screenings are slated from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 and 28. The Feb. 15 showing will take place in the Gerry Forum while the Feb. 28 presentation will be held in Room 201 of Kaplan Hall on the SUNY Orange Newburgh campus.
Admission to all events is free.
Additionally, throughout the month, the College will be featuring, on its social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), relevant quotes from notable figures in African American history and current pop culture, as well as short written and video testimonials from members of the College community regarding the meaning of Black History Month to them.
