Vassar Brewers Drop to Skidmore in Semifinals

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Vassar women’s basketball season came to a close in the Liberty League Semifinals at Skidmore on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Thoroughbreds topped the Brewers 60-45 in tournament action.

Vassar finished the season, 17-10 overall, their most wins since the 2013-14 season.

The Brewers offense was led by Isa Peczuh who scored 13 points with four made three-pointers. Ariella Rosenthal chipped in eight points and seven rebounds while Sophie Nick led the way with 10 rebounds to go along with four points. Four different Brewers each dished out two assists, with Rosenthal, Samarah Cook, Nicole Teta, and Peczuh all handing out two helpers.

Vassar struggled against the Skidmore defense all day, shooting just 28.3% from field (15-53). Skidmore used efficient scoring in the second half to take down Vassar. The Thoroughbreds shot 50% from the field in both the third and fourth quarters.

The game was neck and neck in the first half, with Skidmore taking a one-point lead after the first quarter. Then in the second quarter, it was the Brewers outscoring the opposition by a point o head into the locker room all tied at 25 at the half.

The Brewers just couldn’t find their game offensively in the second half, shooting the ball at a 25% clip over the final 20 minutes. Skidmore went on a quick 15-4 scoring run to open up an 11-point advantage. Vassar was only able to manage six-points in the third and went into the fourth down by 11.

The score was much closer over the final 10 minutes with Skidmore gaining an 18-14 edge. But with an 11-point lead in hand they brought it to 15 before the final horn. The Brewers showed no quit, cutting the deficit to five with 2:14 remaining. It was Cook’s layup that brought the game within two possessions for the Brewers.

Unfortunately that would be the final bucket of the game for Vassar as Skidmore scored the final 10 points to seal the semifinal victory.
