Vassar Tennis Topped By No. 5 Bowdoin, 9-0

INDIAN WELLS, CA – The Vassar College women’s tennis team battled hard against one of the best teams in Division III Sunday, but the No. 5 Polar Bears of Bowdoin College outlasted Vassar 9-0 in non-conference action from California.

Due to rain in the Irvine, CA area, the match was forced to be played in the desert which pushed back the original start time from 1:00 p.m. local time to 4:30 p.m. Pacific. The doubles play was close at No. 2 and No. 3, as freshman Meghan Rodick and senior Courtney Geiss were nipped at No. 3 doubles 8-6 by Viv Daniel and Sasa Jovanovic. VC also was right in the match at No. 2 pairs, but senior Dasha Ivenitsky and freshman Sarra Yekta came up just short to Rachel Bercovitch and Tasha Christ, 8-5.

Vassar saw Rodick batted at the No. 3 position in singles competition, as she forced a super-tiebreaker against Bercovitch. After dropping the first set 6-4, Rodick battled back to earn an emphatic 6-2 second set victory to force the tie-breaker. In the deciding race to 10, Bercovitch was strong as she posted a 10-2 victory to claim the singles’ point. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Tara Edwards pushed Christ before falling 7-5, 6-4, and VC competed well at every singles’ spot despite the scoreline.

The Brewers are back in action Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. local time, taking on Division II Biola University in La Mirada, California.
