Winnie Mandela Passes Away at the Age of 81

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela OLS (September, 26 1936 – April 2, 2018), commonly known as Winnie Mandela, was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician. She held several government positions, including as Deputy Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology.

A member of the African National Congress (ANC) party, she served on the ANC’s National Executive Committee and headed its Women’s League.

Winnie was an activist who fought the apartheid regime in South Africa. Many believed she was far more militant than South Africa’s first black president, her ex-husband Nelson Mandela (they divorced in 1992).

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela died at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg‚ South Africa on April 2, 2018. She was 81.
