Newburgh Prep Charter H.S. Announces Closure

NEWBURGH – Newburgh Prep, the Mid-Hudson region’s first and only charter school, opened its doors at 471 Broadway, Newburgh in September 2013. Serving local students ages 16-21, the school has provided a free educational alternative in a non-traditional environment for students wishing to earn a high school diploma. After five years, Newburgh Prep is slated to close atthe end of this school year, June 2018.

Since its inception, over 65 students have earned New York State Regents diplomas, with more scheduled to graduate in the June 20th graduation ceremony to be held at Kaplan Hall, SUNY Orange, on June 20.

Newburgh Preparatory Charter High School’s five year charter will not be renewed due to a number of factors, including enrollment, attendance, and long-term financial viability. The day-to-day operations of the school will continue through June 30, with the last day of school scheduled for June 22, 2018.

A student transition team has been put in place and is committed to seeing the school year through with a focus on the quality education that has been the hallmark of the Prep. The staff will provide each family with information about educational options for individual students and explain the transition of student records. School administrators, counselors and teachers are available to students and their families to answer any questions.

Board of Trustees Chair Lisa Silverstone said, “We are committed to helping the teaching staff successfully complete the remainder of the school year, and together we will focus on giving our students all that we can to prepare them for future academic success.” She added, “We have been in contact with Newburgh School District leaders and are collaborating to ensure a smooth transition for placement of all students.”
