STEAM Saturday Brings Interactive Education

NEWBURGH– The Hudson Hall Auditorium at Mount Saint Mary College buzzed with excitement on Saturday, March 17 as about 100 middle school students from the Newburgh area enjoyed fun, interactive workshops in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

STEAM Saturday featured Mount professors, students, and alumni working together to highlight possible career paths and get kids excited about learning. About a dozen stations, manned by Mount volunteers, included “Fingerprinting: Uniquely You,” “3D Printing,” “Brush Bots,” “The Mathematics of Dungeons and Dragons,” and more.

“We want you to have a good time, and we want you to learn something,” said Frances Spielhagen, professor of Education and co-director of the Mount’s Center for Adolescent Research and Development (CARD). “We think you’ll get a lot out of this.”

Students enjoyed sessions at three of the workshops before lunch, then took in the Mad Science presentation before heading home.

In addition to the contributions of countless volunteers, STEAM Saturday was supported by CARD and the college’s Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) Education Honor Society.
