James Skoufis Launches State Senate Campaign

HIGHLAND MILLS – State Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) announced Monday his bid to run for State Senate in the 39th Senate District. The Hudson Valley district includes most of Orange County, as well as communities from both Rockland and Ulster Counties. As an Assemblyman since 2013, James has represented many of the constituents he is now running to serve as their next State Senator.

“I’ve been proud to serve our region in the State Assembly where I’ve stood up to special interests and pushed to level an out-of-whack playing field in the Hudson Valley,” Assemblyman James Skoufis said. “Now, as we approach a crossroads, I am proud to announce our campaign to serve in the State Senate. I’ll continue to fight against those forces in Albany and New York City who look to treat the Hudson Valley like a punching bag and ATM. As our Senator, I’ll make sure we get our fair share of education and infrastructure aid as well as continue to represent my constituents with the ethic and integrity they deserve. It’s high time we Make New York Fair Again and demand Albany fully and unequivocally respect the Hudson Valley.”

James Skoufis understands the struggles many families and small businesses are facing, and has worked tirelessly for working- and middle-class Hudson Valley residents. Despite being a relative new comer in the State Assembly, James Skoufis has already earned a reputation as a passionate advocate for his constituents, and has championed efforts to cut taxes, assist small businesses, increase education aid, secure local infrastructure funding, and provide support for our veterans. Elected as a Democrat in a Republican leaning Assembly district, Skoufis has worked across the aisle on many important issues and has always advocated for the needs of all his constituents, earning him great respect across party lines.

Before his election to the State Assembly, James commuted to New York City while also being a Member of the Woodbury Town Board and helped lead relief efforts following Hurricane Irene and organized food, shelter, and financial assistance support for effected families. James graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School in 2005 and went on to earn his B.A. summa cum laude from The George Washington University and M.A. from Columbia University. He lives in Woodbury with his wife, Hillary, who he married in May 2017.

“James Skoufis has proven that he is a passionate advocate for Hudson Valley residents and businesses. From standing up for middle- and working-class families, to helping small businesses grow, to giving our veterans the support they have earned, James has been a terrific public servant. James is the best choice for State Senate and he is the public servant we need for the Hudson Valley,” said NYS Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli
“James shoots straight, works hard, and is more focused on getting things done than playing partisan games,” said U.S. Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18). “He’s earned overwhelming bipartisan support from the people he represents and he’s been an excellent partner in government. I look forward to working alongside him as the next State Senator from the 39th District and I’m very proud to support his candidacy.”

“As the Ulster County Executive my focus has always been on getting important work done for our citizens. With James in the Senate, we’ll have an honest man of action and a true partner in standing up to special interests and delivering for the great people of the Hudson Valley,” said Ulster County Executive Mike Hein.

“James Skoufis has proven himself as a leader in many capacities during his tenure in the NY State Assembly. He is the future in state and national politics.I know he’s the man for the job as our next N.Y. State Senator for the 39th District! He has my full support!” said Harvey Torrance, City of Newburgh Mayor.

“James Skoufis has a strong record of delivering for his constituents. The Hudson Valley needs an independent and outspoken public servant like James Skoufis in the State Senate. Skoufis has proven that he will be the independent leader we need to stand up for our community,” said Haverstraw resident and Rockland County Clerk Paul Piperato.

“Now, more than ever, we need a strong leader to advocate for the taxpayers, small businesses and public schools here in the 39th State Senate District. James Skoufis has proven that he has been able to work across the aisle, in a bi-partisan manner and that is why he has always garnered such strong support from Democrats and Republicans alike. I am thrilled that James is running for State Senate, because he is the ideal person to stand up for our communities and that’s why he has my support.”saidTimothy P. Egan (R), Village of Woodbury Deputy Mayor.
