Students Learn the Menu of Opportunities

PORT EWEN – Ulster County students who attend the Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center (CTE) are regularly introduced to presenters from the academic, business, and industry sectors. This exposure to the various workforce or college opportunities that are available beyond high school plays a significant role in helping to prepare students to be college and career ready.

On September 11, 2018, the young, aspiring chefs learned about the degree programs and financial aid opportunities available at the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America’s (CIA) when representatives from their admissions department visited the CTE.

Robert Tremblay, Associate Director of Admissions, conducted an informative cooking demonstration, allowing the juniors and seniors enrolled in the two-year high school program to witness impressive culinary techniques. The students then were able to speak with the accomplished chef.

Elise Macur, a 2011 Ulster BOCES Culinary program graduate from the Wallkill Central School District, was also on hand to assist the students. After completing her BOCES program, Macur went on to graduate from the CIA and is now an admissions counselor for the Hyde Park campus.

“Every month the Culinary Department invites guest chefs from culinary colleges to come and do a workshop on applications and degree programs, along with a cooking demonstration,” says Ulster BOCES Culinary Instructor Irene Powell. “This gives students a chance to talk to people from admissions about requirements, life on campus, and ask any other questions they may have about furthering their culinary education.”
