Cornwall and Edwards Reach Doubles Final at ITA Regionals

GENEVA – Frances Cornwall and Tara Edwards of the Vassar College women’s tennis team earned two wins on Sunday to move into the doubles final at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships. The No. 3 seeds in the event, Cornwall and Edwards notched an 8-3 victory over NYU’s Judy Kam and Kate Shaffer in the quarterfinals before posting an 8-5 semifinal triumph over fifth-seeded Sophia Aulicino and Audrey Chor of Hamilton.

In Monday’s final, Cornwall and Edwards will take on NYU’s fourth-seeded tandem of Coco Kulle and Flyora Shiyanova, a team they beat 8-6 at last weekend’s Vassar scramble. The doubles final will take place after the singles semifinals, in which Kulle and Shiyanova will face each other.

Cornwall was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the singles competition. She rallied after losing the first set to defeat Kam 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 16. The fourth-seeded Cornwall then dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Skidmore’s Dea Koiava, the No. 6 seed, in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, 16th-seeded Sarra Yekta suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss against top-seeded Risa Fukushige of Skidmore in the round of 16.
