White’s Facility Record Highlights Opening Meet

POUGHKEEPSIE – Max White of the Vassar College men’s swimming & diving team set a Kresge Pool record in the 200 yard backstroke on Saturday. With a time of 2:00.48, which beat the previous mark by just 0.05 seconds, White notched one of four event wins on the day for the Brewers, who dropped a 169-93 decision to Brandeis.

In addition to his victory in the 200 backstroke, White anchored the Brewers to second place in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. He also finished second in the 200 freestyle, notching a time of 1:46.51.

Jake Mier, meanwhile, won both of his individual events in his collegiate debut. Mier registered a 54.82-second clocking in the 100 butterfly and edged the Judges’ Tamir Zitely by 0.23 seconds in the 200 butterfly, notching a winning time of 1:58.81. Nikolas Pham earned Vassar’s other individual victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.47).

Jordan Kalina and Ethan Skuches went 2-3 in the 1000 freestyle before swapping places in the 500 freestyle. Brandon Li, meanwhile, earned a pair of third-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Also capturing third place individually were Duncan Webber in the 100 backstroke, Will Riley in the 100 breaststroke, and Pham in the 200 breaststroke.

The Brewers, who wore pink caps during the meet in support of Vassar’s “Think Pink” initiative for breast cancer awareness, will hit the road for the first time this season when they visit Bard at 6 p.m. on Friday.
