Vassar Brewers Host Hawks to Open Season

POUGHKEEPSIE – A mix of youth and veteran experience highlight this year’s edition of the Vassar women’s basketball team. The trio of seniors are joined by four juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen when the Brewers open the 2018-19 campaign on Tue. Nov. 13 against New Paltz at 6 p.m.

The Brewers went 17-10 last season, while finishing fifth in the Liberty League (11-7). Vassar loses two of last year’s top scorers, but return last year’s leader in junior Sophie Nick. Nick was a Liberty League first teamer in 2017-18 and averaged 13.1 points per game. She also led the team with 7.2 rebounds a game.

Last season, Isa Peczuh, Maeve Sussman, Julia Roellke Ryan DeOrio, Maddie Leong and Jackie Cenan played in 23 games or more and all return. Peczuh averaged 5.9 points a game, while playing in all 27 games. Peczuh also made the team’s second-most three pointers with 32.

The team averaged 61.9 points per game and outscored opponents by an average margin of 5.5 points throughout last season. The Brewers were strong on the glass, out rebounding opponents by 6.4 per game while bringing down 40.1 boards per game.

In addition to the returners, Vassar brings in two freshmen with Dani Douglas and Sarah Gillooly. Head coach Candice Signor-Brown is back at the helm of the Brewers for her 10th season and will be assisted by Claire Mattox for the third year.

Following New Paltz, the Vassar women travel to Arlington, VA for the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 16. Game is set to start at. 7:30 p.m. against Ursinus.
