POUGHKEEPSIE – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has released its final Oracle/ITA Division III Women’s Rankings for 2018, and the Vassar College duo of Frances Cornwall and Tara Edwards came in as the No. 8 doubles team in the Northeast Region. They were the highest-ranked tandem in the Liberty League.
In September, Cornwall and Edwards reached the final at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships. The No. 3 seeds in the event, they won their first four matches before falling, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to fourth-seeded Coco Kulle and Floyra Shiyanova of NYU in the final. The pair was selected as the Liberty League Doubles Team of the Week for that performance.
Playing as regular partners for the first time, Cornwall and Edwards lost just once in seven matches during the fall campaign. They defeated Kulle and Shiyanova by an 8-6 count at the season-opening Vassar Scramble on Sept. 16 and also earned an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 doubles in the Brewers’ 9-0 Liberty League win at Union on Sept. 29.
Vassar, which won both if its dual matches in the fall, resumes its 2018-19 schedule at Army West Point on Feb. 9.
