Mount Suffers First Loss Of The Season

KINGS POINT – The Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Swimming team fell for the first time this season on Saturday with a 213-76 loss on the road at league rival USMMA. Freshman Jillian Bunch and senior Kyra McNamee each scored a pair of second place finishes for the Knights.

Bunch had a strong day for the Knights in the sprint freestyle events, taking the runner-up spot in both the 50-yard and 100-yard races. Her 50-yard time was 27.27 seconds before taking second in the 100-yard race in 59.67 seconds.

McNamee took second for Mount Saint Mary in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:09.61 before taking the second spot for the Knights in the 500-yard freestyle race in 5:47.11.

Three other Mount Saint Mary swimmers scored runner-up finishes for the Knights on Saturday. Daley O’Keefe finished with a time of 12:16.72 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, while Katie Barber took second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:28.98. Shayla McCarroll finished off a strong day with a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke 1:08.70 and a third place showing in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:28.29.

Mount Saint Mary also picked up second place points in both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay races. The team of O’Keefe, McCarroll, Barber and McNamee opened the meet with a time of 2:05.47 in the medley race, while the quartet of Bunch, Lauren Schroeder, O’Keefe and McNamee closed the day with a time of 1:53.06 in the freestyle event.

Saturday’s loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-1 overall and to 2-1 in Skyline Conference competition. The Knights return to action on January 18 on the road at FDU-Florham. The non-conference contest is set to get underway at 4:00 p.m.
