Tigers Down Vassar Brewers In Semifinals

ITHACA – The Vassar women’s basketball season came to a close in the Liberty League Semifinals against RIT on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers went on to win 70-62 and will face Ithaca in tomorrow’s championship game.

Vassar finished the season, 21-6 overall, the third 21-plus win season in program history.
The Brewers offense was led by Sophie Nick who scored 23 points with seven rebounds. Isa Peczuh chipped in 16 points while Ryan DeOrio had 11 points to go along with five rebounds.

The game was neck and neck in the first half, with RIT taking a two-point lead after the first quarter. Then in the second quarter, the Brewers took a three-point, 21-18, lead at 4:41 when Peczuh found Dani Douglas for the open trey. RIT would retake the lead soon after though to go up 34-31 at the end of the half.

After Nick tied things up again, Peczuh drained a three at 5:33 in the third to lead 43-42. A 10-0 RIT run right after gave the Tigers a lead they would not give up and they would take a 57-47 lead at the end of the third. The final stanza was all RIT, with the Tigers leading by as much as 13. A steal and fastbreak layup by Peczuh made it an eight-point contest with under a minute to, and DeOrio scored at 0:23 to make it 66-60. The Tigers would connect on their free throws though, and they hung on for the win.

The Brewers shot well, making 54.2 percent of their shots, while RIT shot 44.6 percent from the field. Vassar edged RIT in rebounds 29-26, but the Tigers had 16 steals to the Brewers nine.
