Knights Shine at Skyline Conference Championship

FARMINGDALE – The Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Track and Field team had a strong day last Sunday at the 2019 Skyline Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The Knights, who finished third with 118.5 points, featured four individual champions, led by a pair of victories from 2019 Skyline Conference Field Athlete of the Year Alexandra Salamone.

Salamone continued her standout season on Sunday, winning the Shot Put and Discus while adding a fourth place finish in the Hammer Throw. Salamone posted a winning toss of 10.94 meters in the Shot Put before setting a school record with a mark of 35.49 meters in the Discus. Salamone finished off a strong day with a mark of 34.37 meters in the Hammer.

Sophomore Samantha Papadopoulos also had a big day for the Mount, scoring a win in the Triple Jump, a second place showing in the High Jump and adding a school record time in the 100-meter hurdles. Papadopoulos won the Triple Jump with a leap of 9.01 meters and posted a mark of 1.40 meters in the High Jump, good for runner-up points. On the track, Papadopoulos placed second with a new school mark in the 100-meter Hurdles, posting a time of 17.27 seconds.

A third sophomore, Zoe Jabs, was the third member of the class to score a win for the Mount. She bested the field in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase in a time of 13:40.89, topping the field by better than 30 seconds.

Mount Saint Mary also received strong showings on Sunday from Valerie Lupi who took second in the Javelin with a throw of 25.23 meters and Michelle Gildea who took third in the 100-meter Hurdles in 17.64 seconds and fourth in the 400-meter Hurdles in 1:17.70.

Alexis Papadopoulos scored sixth place points in the 100-meter dash for the Knights, with Angela Barton picking up fifth place points in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 21:40.59.
In the field, the Mount saw Gabriella Antich place fifth in the Discus with a mark of 24.98 meters, with Kelly Platt finishing fourth in the Javelin and sixth in the Discus. Taylor O’Brien wrapped up the day with a sixth place finish in the Javelin.

Farmingdale State won the team event with 191 points, with the United States Merchant Marine Academy and the Mount following with 117 and 118.5. Rounding out the field were St. Joseph’s-L.I. (40.5) and the College of Mount Saint Vincent (26).

Mount Saint Mary continues the 2019 Outdoor Season on May 9 at the Army West Point Twilight Meet.
